We sat down with our very own pHin Athlete Ambassador, world championship swimmer Haley Anderson. After a successful showing at the 17th FINA World Championships in Hungary this past July, where she earned a silver medal as part of the 5K team relay, Haley talked with us about life after Worlds and what she’s doing to prepare for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
What did you do to get mentally and physically prepared to compete at World Championships this summer?
For me this year was all about the mental aspect of staying healthy and happy while maintaining my ability to compete at an elite level. This year I approached World Championships very differently than in the past. With the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo already in mind, I knew in order to be successful in three years I needed to approach this post-Olympic year a bit easier and enjoy life outside the pool. It was a bit of a mental reset year. I was still able to focus on training, but looking forward to 2020 and not back at 2017 as the sole focus.
What was most memorable about your experience at Worlds?
My most memorable moment was competing in the new 5K team relay. I love being a part of a team and a relay is the ultimate team experience. Getting up to race with three teammates behind you is so much fun, and as an athlete I approach it differently. Swimming can be a very individual sport, so the relay allows me to enjoy the moments and pre-race excitement with three other people.
What’s next in terms of competition?
I have two races left this year, and both are new races I have not competed in before. It’s very important to add new things into training and racing in order to always improve and move forward. This is a perfect year to try new things and make sure I have not gotten stagnant. Keeping things fresh is important.
What did you do after Worlds to rest and recuperate?
After World Championships, I was able to travel in Europe on my own. It was amazing to be able to be independent and explore so many new countries.
Haley, your friends at pHin are rooting for you as you ramp up your training for the 2020 Toky Olympic Games!
